“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” —Viktor Frankl

The year was 2001. I tiptoed to the front window of my apartment, pinching the curtain with my thumb and index finger, careful not to let anyone see I was looking out. My gut had been right, something was wrong. Heat surged through my body, my heart sinking in my chest as my stomach turned over a dozen times. I was simultaneously stunned by fear and sadness, all these emotions rushing through me in seconds. Time was running out. So this is it, I thought. This is how it’s going down. What I feared all along was winding its way up my rickety metal staircase. I suppose it’s time to face the music.

Walking to the door, I took a deep breath to compose myself, though I knew nothing could truly prepare me for what waited outside. I grabbed the knob and swung the door wide open, standing there in my pajama bottoms and worn moccasin slippers. The sun was shining low through the trees, creating a beautiful cascade of sunshine across my doorstep. I squinted at the wonderful morning, thinking, A shame it has to go away. Taking my gaze off nature and the blue sky, I looked down at the mess I had created. The county’s task force had strategically placed themselves behind cars and trees, their fully automatic ARs pointed directly at me. What the fuck! How the hell did I get here? How did I so completely screw up my life?

Have you ever wondered this same thing during your darkest moments? If so, you’re in the right place.

How this standoff ended, and the series of choices that led to it, is a story I'll share later in these pages. For now, let me mention my life didn’t start out this way. In fact, I had a great childhood, filled with the kind of memories most people look back on and smile at: family dinners, Little League games, summer adventures. My parents were good people who did the best they could with what they knew. However, sometimes, that foundation just isn’t enough to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Sometimes in life, we have to learn things the hard way. Not because we weren’t taught better, but because something inside us refuses to accept the easier path. Sometimes our pride whispers that we know better, our stubbornness convinces us to push boundaries, or our lack of confidence drives us to prove ourselves in all the wrong ways. And for some of us, the only way to truly learn life’s most important lessons is to walk straight through the damn fires of hell. I’m one of those people.

That moment, standing in my doorway facing armed agents, was just one stop on my journey through those hell fires. One point that tried to break me. My life reads like a crazy script written by a bad screenwriter who stuffed in everything that could possibly go wrong. Time behind bars in my early years. A brush with suicide that brought me face-to-face with my own mortality. A business venture that swallowed my life savings whole. And now, a battle with blood cancer that reminds me daily how precious and uncertain life truly is.

But here’s the thing about walking through fire: if you survive, you emerge transformed. Each of these experiences, as painful as they were, taught me something invaluable. My time incarcerated showed me the raw power of consequences and choices. My dance with death revealed what truly matters in life. That failed business? It taught me humility, patience, and wisdom. And my ongoing battle with an incurable blood cancer? It drives me to put every damn ounce of energy into this beautiful life, because I know death is always there. As they say, you only get one shot, so you better give it your all.

This is what The Breaking Point is all about. It’s not just about surviving adversity; it’s about using it as a catalyst for transformation. It’s about developing the inner strength to rebound from your personal hell. Struggles, setbacks, failures, disease, heartbreak, misfortune, trouble with the law, drugs, distress, they can either whittle you down to nothing, leaving you paralyzed with fear, or give you an opportunity to grow, emerging stronger than before.

The Breaking Point starts with accepting what we cannot control while taking full responsibility for how we respond to it. It means listening to life’s greatest teacher, adversity itself. Those of us who have been through real adversity with an attitude of learning from it have gained resilience. It has fortified us well for this journey called life.

I wrote this book for us, the ones who have gone through struggles and pains, disease and disaster. For those who, like me, fucked up their lives almost beyond repair, who dismantled what once seemed like a fair hand into one with the odds stacked against us. For those who finally realized they were ready to depart the self-destructive path and seek a new way into a life worth living.

You see, the setbacks we’ve faced were placed before us for a reason. They were opportunities disguised as obstacles. The purpose behind your pain might not be clear right now, but eventually, that purpose will reveal itself when you’re ready to see it.

You, who have been through such disasters, are someone extraordinary. The lessons you’ve learned aren’t taught in any classroom or online course. They’re yours and only yours. Nobody can take them from you, and nobody can teach what you yourself have been through, because everyone’s life adversities are unique.

We don’t have to remain down just because it feels good, or because it’s the easy choice. We, the defeated, shall rise to the top because we, unlike most, have gone through struggles that will fuel us to our ultimate victory. We’ve learned things like patience, persistence, failure, and defeat firsthand. We’ve lost money, time, and health. We’ve seen things most cannot imagine, and we survived. We now view the world through a different lens, one that most cannot comprehend because they made the “right” choices and lived “safe” lives.

It’s time to use your scars as a map to find your buried treasure. Time to rebuild from what once broke you. Time for you to reach beyond your breaking point and discover what lies ahead.
